February is Black History Month and the film “Sound Track to a Coup d’Etat” is an award winning documentary showing some amazing black artists throughout the jazz era. It is beautifully laid out with narrated excerpts from Andrée Blouin and In Koli Jean Bofane . This documentary illustrates how the CIA used legendary jazz musicians to run cover as they assisted in the assassination of the newly elected Prime Minister of Congo, Patrice Lumumba. It was a crime of domination, one that we have seen throughout history, and one that we continue to see to this day.
During this same period, Malcolm X spoke often about the importance of Congo in the Black Liberation Movement, claiming that “as long as we think we should get Mississippi straightened out before we worry about the Congo, you’ll never get Mississippi straightened out.” (africasacountry.com)
Looking at the world today I believe this can be said about all of our struggles; we must realize that the Black Liberation movement, just as the liberation for Palestine, and the liberation of all oppressed peoples, are one struggle. For the past few centuries that has primarily been against Western Imperialism. It is the violent extraction of other nation’s resources. Resources that are used to distract us as we marvel at the latest device. Resources that are primarily used in security and military operations that further our oppression and that of our siblings around the world. In the pursuit of these resource the region is destabilized as different state powers try to take control of the area. Meanwhile the people there have to struggle to survive.
That’s why we are raising money for Hope of St Joseph Shelter Inc, a charity that runs two shelters in Eastern Congo, supporting those who have been effected by the on-going crisis. Christophe Lwiyando will join us to speak about this wonderful charity and share with us what the situation is like in the Congo today.
The screening is free though you can get a ticket at the following link to help us know how many folk will be joining us on Feb. 22nd.
We will also be serving up free popcorn. And there will be other treats and drinks for purchase at the cafe.
Can’t wait to see you there!
